It Looks Like A Regular Sculpture, Until It Spins

When we watch someone creating a sculpture, it is amazing how it just seems to come to life. When we look at a piece of wood or stone, it doesn’t appear to have a shape but the artist sees the potential of what it could become. Of course, there is an endless variety of what could be created, and these strobe animated sculptures have a beauty all of their own.

These pieces of art are the creation of a man named John Edmark, a teacher of design at Stanford University. When these sculptures are spun, the take on a life of their own and it is quite amazing. When he created them, he uses a mathematical concept known as the Fibonacci Sequence. It is found in many beautiful parts of nature, from flowers and pine cones to seashells. It can even be applied to music and it is something that is naturally pleasing to humans.

The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers in which each number in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers. It’s a part of math that many of us don’t ever consider but it is one that is a part of the world around us in a wonderful way.
