When you wake up in the morning and go to work, you really don’t expect anything out of the ordinary to take place. For the most part, your anticipation for a normal day is going to come true. We go to work, come home, eat dinner and get ready to do it all over again the next day. Perhaps that is what the employees at R and R Garage in North Carolina were thinking when they showed up for work that day. That was before they realize that their life was going to change from that moment forward.
Although the day may have started out normally, it wasn’t long before a rooster wandered over into the garage and just decided to set up shop. It was assumed that the rooster had been abandoned so they gave him some leftovers out of the refrigerator. After leaving for a long weekend, the last thing they thought they would see when they came in was the rooster. As it turns out, however, not only was he there but he hasn’t left since. They decided that they would name the rooster Earl.
Earl doesn’t get in the way very often. In fact, he just sleeps in a tree nearby but everybody looks out for his safety, particularly when the weather is bad. Earl comes over to say hi to the employees when they come in for work and he has a daily routine that everybody knows.
“He comes running when the first guy comes in to open up for the day,” Joe Gallo, co-owner of R and R Garage, said. “He gets his cup of scratch, then wanders the shop looking for any bugs that may be around. He gets up under all the toolboxes and workbenches looking for spiders and anything else he can find.”
He hunts for his breakfast in the morning and then he follows the employees around to hang out with them while they work. He’s just being one of the boys!
“He will come up in the shop and usually lay down and sleep under the car you’re working on or in a corner,” Gallo said. “He doesn’t care about loud noises or people walking by. He will even sleep in front of the office door and we’ve tripped over him a few times.”
Earl doesn’t realize that he is in the way most of the time.
Everybody just accepts him for what he is and does their best to work around him.
Now that Earl was working at the shop, he is also a local celebrity. Everybody at the shop loves having a rooster around and they are even thinking about changing their logo and getting shirts to make him an official part of the team.
“We can’t believe the attention Earl is getting … it’s the town gossip now,” Gallo said. “We do have customers that bring other friends or family to see Earl when they come pick up their vehicles.”
They don’t know were Earl came from or why he chose this garage to call home. One thing is certain, however, nobody is ready for him to leave anytime soon.
