When you think about popular songs, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? More than likely, you have a favorite song and it may even get stuck in your head, every time you hear it. There is no doubt that thousands of songs are written every day and some of them are going to become popular. Every once in a while, however, a song becomes popular beyond anyone’s expectation.
Looking back to 2012, we had a rather interesting song that was, Sexy and I Know It. It was almost impossible to turn on the radio anytime that year and not hear this song playing. One father from Taylorsville, Utah, thought it would be a good idea to make a parody and spoof that funny song. What ended up happening, however, was far more than he could have ever expected. It went wildly viral.
This song was the brainchild of Chad and Angela Morton. They were trying to come up with some ‘white elephant’ gifts for a Christmas party. They came up with the idea for the video and it turned out to be a winner.
When it comes to creativity around Christmas time, this couple is well known. Just the year before this video was put out, Chad recorded a number of Christmas songs in funny voices and even made up a mock cover for an album. Everyone in his family got a copy of the CD. It was so popular that everyone wondered how he would top it the next year.
The Morton’s are not only fun gift-givers, they are also dedicated parents. They have 5 children, including triplets that are almost 2 years old. In order to get the best Christmas gift this year, they decided they would include the youngsters.
“One night, my wife and I were sitting on the couch and Angela said, ‘Why don’t we do a music video?’” Chad said. “We sat there brainstorming for a Christmas song, and we couldn’t think of anything funny, so then we started thinking of other songs, and we thought of ‘Sexy and I Know It.’”
Chad went all out for this production. He bought some new video software and then they got to work. This was no small feat. The entire month of December was used for shooting this parody, and they named it ‘I’m a daddy and I know it’.
As the star of the show, Chad leads his five children through the lyrics and sound effects. He is a stay-at-home dad, so he is used to this routine which includes changing diapers and doing laundry.
“As soon as we brought out the camera, they were super excited and got real goofy,” Chad said. “We’ve got tons of footage we didn’t use for the video of them being goofy, but we were trying to figure out what scenes would best go with the lyrics.”
After the video was uploaded, it was massively viral. The problem is that they only made one copy. It seemed as if everyone was asking for a copy so they put it on YouTube on December 24 and told a few friends. It then spread like wildfire.
There are so many people that have gotten a chuckle out of this video that it is difficult to count. Quite honestly, it is hilarious so it is easy to see why Chad and his children had such a popular gift.
The family has enjoyed the attention but they don’t want to make multiple videos. They never intended to go viral or to get famous but they do think it is fun to log on and count the views.
