Nurse Adopts An Abused Baby And Then Learns That She Has A Twin

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about nurses? Do you think about a kind individual that cares for those who are unable to care for themselves? Perhaps you think about somebody who works tirelessly and goes out of their way to ensure people are safe and well. You would be correct in both of those cases but sometimes, there is a nurse that goes above and beyond the call of duty. That was the case with this nurse who worked at the Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.

This story happened in March 2017. A 14-month-old baby girl named Delilah was admitted to the hospital. Unfortunately, Delilah had been horribly abused and neglected. Although she was only 14 months old, she was severely malnourished and suffered from broken bones, including a skull fracture. These were not accidental issues, they were trauma brought about on purpose. It is a situation that makes our blood boil when we stop to think about it.

The entire hospital staff recognized the situation that Delilah was in. She was now facing the possibility of living life without her parents and being passed from one foster home to another. Fortunately, she had someone watching out over her.

That special someone was a 30-year-old nurse who works in the pediatric intensive care unit. Her name is Jess Hamm and she was there the day that they brought Delilah in. She saw the young child, skinny, weak and broken. It really touched her heart that Delilah had to go through the problems at such a young age but she was still strong and fighting for her life.

When just walked over to Delilah, her heart was full of love for the young child. Delilah then reached up, looked into her eyes and grabbed her finger.

That was the moment that she just knew she needed to do something. She decided in her heart that she would take Delilah home and adopt her as her own child. She knew that she could provide the child with all of the loving care that she needed but had never had up until that time.

There were a few steps necessary before she could go from being Delilah’s nurse to being her new mom. Caseworkers from the Florida Department of Children and Families got involved. They sat down together, paperwork was filled out for adoption and then Jess learned something about Delilah that changed everything from that moment forward.

Delilah was not alone in the world. She had a twin sister and that little girl was also in need of saving as well. It took place about two years ago but since that time, there has been a lot that has happened in Jess’ home.
If you are looking for someone who is an inspiration, you have found it to an unlimited degree. This woman has received a lot of recognition for what she has done through the online community. She deserves every bit of praise that she has received.
