Some people are born to be heroes or they may put themselves in the line of fire, so to speak, so that they have more of an opportunity to be a hero. This can include first responders, such as firemen and policemen.
Although there may be heroes that we see every day, there are also ordinary individuals who become heroes because they are at the right place at the right time. When they see some type of tragedy, they have a choice but they make the right choice and they jump in to help.
That was the case with a young man by the name of Corion Evans. According to MSNBC, he was getting ready to head home after being out with a group of friends on July 5. He watched a car drive by and straight into the Pascagoula River.
There were three teenage girls in the car and before he knew it, they were in the water. He spoke to a local news station, saying that there was only a little bit of the car sticking out of the water.
Fortunately, Evans did not panic but he ran over and rescued the girls one after another. He said: “I was just like, ‘I can’t let none of these folks die. They need to get out the water’. So, I just started getting them. I wasn’t even thinking about nothing else.”
It wasn’t very long after he started rescuing the girls that a police officer also saw what happened and jumped into the water. The police officer was taking one of the girls to safety but suddenly, he was also struggling to stay above water.
Fortunately, Evans did the right thing. He said: “I turned around and see the officer, he’s drowning, he’s going underwater, he’s gasping for air, he’s trying to stay above water. … That’s when I start going again.”
Evans was able to get to the police officer and bring him to safety. After everyone was safe, he had an opportunity to tell the news that he had been swimming since he was three years old but he never thought that his skills will be put to the test.
Regardless of how long he had been swimming, it’s obvious that this young man is a hero. The community and local police department are praising him for his bravery and selflessness. He was even awarded a Certificate of Commendation from the mayor.
