High School Male Teacher Instructs Female Student To ‘Hold In’ Period and Wait Unit Break To Use Restroom

It’s a sad state of affairs when there are still so many men out there who believe discussions about menstruation with a woman shameful. The truth is that everyone should have at least some basic knowledge about a woman’s monthly cycle if for no other reason than to avoid uncomfortable situations. It seems amazing that men who have women in their lives can be so ignorant about the most fundamental biology of what’s going on when they are experiencing her period. However, one mother was floored after her daughter’s teacher expressed his astounding ignorance in a horrid way.

While sharing her story on Mumsnet,  a discussion platform used by parents in the UK, the mom talked about her daughter’s experience in the “Am I Being Unreasonable” thread. The mom shared how her the teacher asked her daughter to “hold in” her menstrual flow as though that was even possible.

“DD is 15 and her school have a no going to the toilet during lesson time rule, which I completely agree with on the whole as I know how disruptive it can be if people are constantly in and out, and how everyone just uses it as an excuse to bunk off (I am a teacher too – very different environment though) Only exception is if you have a medical note from a doctor. Today in one of her lessons DD says she could feel that she really needed to change her pad, she was getting quite worried about it leaking. She eventually asked the (male) teacher if she could go to the loo,” read the post.

The angry mom continued detailing the heartbreaking conversation between her child and the clueless male teacher.

“Teacher: No, you know the rules
DD: I really need it.
Teacher: What did I just say?
DD: It’s a girl problem…
Teacher: What do you mean?
DD: Umm… I’m on my period
Teacher: Break is only in half an hour, hold it in till then”

“Obviously, those aren’t the exact words said but she says it’s pretty accurate.
DD is quite shy so did just wait till break (no leakage btw).
She doesn’t seem overly bothered but AIBU to be pretty shocked at him telling her to hold it in? Surely even men have some basic idea that it doesn’t work like that?”

This account is even more shocking given that the man is a teacher who surely must be a bit better educated than the average person, but for some reason seemed obvious to the fact that women are incapable of controlling their periods. And let’s be honest, even if it were like urination, making a child hold that in for 30 minutes is just cruel; they are supposed to be there to learn; how is any student supposed to do so while in so much discomfort? This teacher either knowing put her daughter in an embracing situation or needs to go back to school himself. The mom said that her child wound up waiting for almost two hours before she was allowed to change her pad.

While there were plenty of parents who disagreed with the teacher’s decision, some actually tried to defend it, noting how some students have lied about their period as a way to get out of class.

“It’s true – girls do use “it’s my period” to get out. I’ve never had a period myself that would cause instant drowning in a half-hour, I must admit,” wrote one user.

However, the comment section’s prevailing opinion was that the teacher was flat-out wrong to tell a 15-year-old to hold her blood in.

“Hold it in???!! How the [redacted] is hse meant to do that? Does the moron not realize that we don’t piss out blood voluntarily?! If we could do that then there would be no need of sanitary products surely? God, I am actually raging on your behalf. The [redacted] needs telling,” shared Sanshin.

A few even suggest that her daughter would have been within her rights to disobey his idiotic command and went to the restroom without his permission.

“In situations (where teachers are being idiotic about the toilet rules) I would always tell my dd to just leave and go to the toilet, if she gets into trouble so be it – I would back her up. Trying to deal with a period leak or a dodgy tummy it would be worse to not go to the loo and spend the rest of your school life remembered as ‘the girl who leaked everywhere or shat herself’ then nipping out of the classroom for 5 mins and maybe getting detention,” they suggested.

Sadly, this problem is more widespread than most people realize. Here’s a video featuring a story about an 11-year-old girl who bled through her clothes twice because her teachers would not allow her to go to the restroom.
