Doris Day Died Without A Funeral Or A Grave

There’s been plenty of actresses and actors through the ages that have come and gone. Some of them we may remember and others may have been gone too long for us to know.

Doris Day is somebody who has not been in the business for many years and she passed away a few years ago, but she is still being that we know down to this day. After all, she started some epic movies during her time, including her own sitcom show that ran from 1968 till 1973.

Although many people know of Doris Day, they may not know a lot about her. Something that you may not know is that she was married four times. Her first marriage was from 1941 to 1943 at the second was from 1946 until 1949.

Her third marriage happened when she was only 29 years old in 1951 when she married a film producer. Finally, she married Barry Comden and they were married until 1982.

One of the difficulties that Doris Day had was discussing her death. She didn’t talk about it and she did even discuss her pets and what would happen when she eventually died. When she did die, she had no funeral and a grave marker was not put up. Even though she died in 2019, there was no memorial held.

When she was born, she was named Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff and she had a real interest in dance performance. She started her career when she sang Sentimental Journey and later was an actress on the silver screen. Eventually, she was more focused on singing after she was injured in a car accident.

Doris Day absolutely loved Ella Fitzgerald and was really following what she did by the time 1946 rolled around. Interestingly, Fitzgerald even sang one of her songs at a later time.

One of the things that Doris Day was perhaps known best for is fighting for animal rights. She would go before Congress to lobby them and a number of animal welfare organizations heard her as well. Although she had a very pleasant personality, she didn’t hold back when it came to animals.

According to Time, she didn’t know her real birthday until she was 95 years old. Most of the time prior to that, she thought she was two years younger. She died when she was 97 in 2019.

Since death was always difficult for Doris Day, she had a hard time discussing it with others. This came through in an interview with People, when her manager, Bob Bashara had the following to say:

“I’d say we need to provide for her dogs (after she died), and she’d say, ‘I don’t want to think about it’ and she said, ‘Well, you just take care of them.’ She had several when her will was written, and she wanted to be sure they were taken care of. She didn’t like to talk about the dogs dying.”.

Although he isn’t sure why she didn’t have a funeral, he did think that it was because she was a shy individual. He said: “She never let her celebrity affect her and who she was, and she was always the little girl from Cincinnati who was extraordinarily talented and went out in the world and did what she loved to do despite herself. She was guileless, and I had discussions with her about how popular she was, and she would say, ‘I don’t understand it’ about why she was so loved.”
