Many of us have trouble speaking in front of large crowds. And the idea of singing in front of an audience may send chills down most people’s spines. It’s easy to imagine the jitter, nerves, and petrifying stage fright an adult may experience when doing this, but try to imagine how it would feel for a 13-year-old? Now, imagine being 13 on stage performing before a crowd at the mall and being suddenly surprised by the famous singer whose song you’re singing stepping up on stage to join you in a duet? It’s a pretty safe bet that most of us would absolutely lose it.
However, 13-Year-old Sidney Bourbeau managed to do better than most of us when she found herself in this unlikely scenario. Sydney was singing a cover of “Thinking Out Loud” when international music superstar Ed Sheeran decided to join her on stage and help her perform his song at the West Edmonton mall in Alberta, Canada. Her performance was part of a fundraiser for the local Humane Society. There was already a pretty decent crowd gathered around when Sydney began the song. And she was absolutely killing it. However, she had no idea that Sheeran was in the mall at the time doing a little shopping. He and his cousin, Murray Cummings, overheard her singing, and Cummings began filming as Ed made his way toward the stage.

In the video, we see Sheeran walking through the mall and onto the stage. At first, Sydney doesn’t seem to recognize him, but soon she displays the telltale signs of celebrity recognition.

Sheeran grabs the microphone and begins to sing along, but it’s evident that he isn’t trying to steal his young fan’s spotlight completely.

A few seconds later, he gives Sydney the mic back, and the pair continue to sing as a duet with Sheeran harmonizing with her vocals. It was pure magic.

And despite her shock, along with the swelling audience, Sydney showed the poise of a real pro on stage, never missing a note.

The two concluded their beautiful impromptu duet, as the crowd began to applaud and cheer in excitement. Still cool as a cucumber, Sydney smiles and gives her favorite singer a huge hug to show him how much she appreciated the honor of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We just love hearing stories about celebrities who take the time to make their fan’s day just a little brighter. This wasn’t planned or staged, it just happened naturally, and it’s sure to leave Sydney with a wonderful memory that she’ll cherish for the rest of her life. Not to mention, he helped bring much-needed attention to a very worthy cause!
