Have you started wearing a face mask when you go out to run your errands or to go to work? Some communities are requiring that their citizens wear masks as they try to flatten the curve of COVID-19. However, some individuals are opting to wear them even if the laws in their communities aren’t requiring masks. I know that when I go shopping, I wear a mask. I want to protect myself but I also don’t want to bring any illnesses home to my family. Furthermore, even though I have minimal exposure, I don’t want to risk infecting essential workers or first responders just in case I become a carrier.
When it comes to wearing a mask, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you wear “cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.” They specifically list grocery stores and pharmacies. The CDC provides tips such as making sure the mask fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face, is secured with ear loops or ties, includes multiple layers of fabric, and a few other tips. However, all of this is a waste of time if the front of the mask is missing or has a big hole in it. Why even wear a mask if that’s the case?

That’s probably exactly what a clerk at a Kentucky convenience store wondered when a woman walked into his store wearing a mask with a hole cut out in the front. Before she even got into the store, he had his phone ready to record what he was sure would be a hilarious conversation. She delivered, and when he asked her where she got her mask, she said that the slit mak3es it “easier to breathe.” The woman had been pumping gas and had come inside to pay. She said that since they had to wear them, at least with the slit, she could breathe easily. Joe thanked her and said he was going to do it too. However, Joe wasn’t wearing a mask.
