Clever Parents Are Making Edible Sand for Their Babies by Blending Up Cheerios

Lots of parents are spending even more time than usual with their children these days because the coronavirus pandemic has shut down so many daycare centers, schools, and workplaces. COVID-19 continues to sweep across the U.S. and there’s no end in sight anytime soon. Because of this, parents are getting more creative in finding fun and creative ways to keep their kids entertained. The most recent genius craze that has taken the world of parenting by storm is blending up Cheerios (yes, the cereal) in a blender and letting their kids play with it as if it’s sand. Edible sand that’s full of fiber, that is.

Parents have long been giving Cheerios to their kids as a healthy snack, even back when I was a kid, I think. Why didn’t some of us think of this cool idea before? I don’t know, but now that someone has, it just seems so obvious. It all started with a TikTok user named @elleannachristine. By using her handy Nutribullet, which is ubiquitous in most kitchens, Elle demonstrates how to blend the Cheerios up to make fun and functional edible sand. The resulting “sand” is too perfect and again, veteran parents like me as saying, “Duh! Why didn’t I think of that???” In the video below, you can see Elle’s ingenious technique.

My child spilled a box of Cheerios on the floor when she was little and danced around in them in the kitchen until there were crumbs all over the house. I should have known right then that Cheerios makes excellent sand because it was about as hard to clean up as it is to get sand from the beach out of everything. It seems like we felt Cheerio crumbs under our feet for weeks after that incident. After Elle demonstrated her brilliant idea, tons of other parents started blending up Cheerios in their kitchens and posting the videos, too. Now it has become a full-blown craze and parents are making adorable little sandboxes with the “sand” and other kitchen items.

This is probably a great outdoor activity, or you can be prepared to have to clean a lot as I did. Trust me on this: it’s just as messy as sand. Looking for more ideas for fun stuff for the kids? Check out the video below.
