Teacher Is Given A Metal Detector So He Digs Up A Roman Ring From 2000 Years Ago

I believe that most of us would say that we have a hobby. For some of us, it may be playing games and for others, it could be anything from putting together jigsaw puzzles to hiking.

In St. Just, England, a man by the name of Mike Burke recently took up a new hobby, metal detecting. His wife, Julie, had watched a television series with him and decided to buy him a metal detector for Christmas.

Metal detecting is a wonderful hobby but for Burke, it was something especially nice. You see, he managed to discover a Roman ring that dates back from the first or second century A.D. Where did he find it? It was right in his garden.

Typically, he wouldn’t be able to go out in the front garden because there are a lot of flowers. Since everything seemed to be dying and it was time to rake up, he decided to take advantage of it and he took his metal detector out and started swinging it.

Suddenly, he got a signal and when he started digging, he saw what he thought was a fleck of gold. It was anywhere between six and 10 inches below the surface and at first, he thought it was just a bottlecap. After pulling it out, he discovered it was a gold ring.

After rinsing it off, he thought it may be something important so he got in touch with the Finds Liaison Officer. He turned over the treasure and they are now looking into the possibility of putting it in a museum.

When something like this is found in the area, it will be passed on to the museum and eventually, they could get compensated for it. If the museum is not interested in it, they would receive the treasure back again.

For Burke, finding a ring was just a side benefit. He loves metal detecting because he is able to relax. Even if he is out with many others, he simply goes out for a walk in the field with his headphones on and enjoys the peace and quiet.

Finding an occasional treasure is also a good thing.
