The reality of life that many of us tend to overlook is the fact that accidents happen on a daily basis. One of the ways in which they happen is with automobiles and they are perhaps some of the most dangerous items that we have in our lives. This fact became clear to Ohio State patrol officer, Eric Devers. Of course, he was probably well aware of the dangers of driving an automobile but when he saw what happened on this day, his life took an unexpected turn.
Devers was driving on the highway while on patrol. Suddenly, he saw that the side railing was destroyed ahead of him and when following the tracks, a semi truck was sitting in the grass at the bottom of the hill. This was a new accident and it had not yet been reported. After stopping his patrol car, he ran down the hill to the truck and looked inside. That is when he saw a man sitting in the driver seat unconscious and bleeding. He was gasping for air and his eyelids were half closed.
He attempted to wake him up but it didn’t take long before his eyes rolled back in his head.
“I was able to step up to that truck with him, he was taking very, very little, gasping breaths, hardly like he was alive at all. Our academy is so extensive in its training that at that point my mind just essentially went on autopilot. I just did what I knew I had to do,” commented Devers.”
He knew that there wasn’t much time left so he began doing CPR. A passerby also stopped and lent a hand. They continued to administer CPR until emergency services arrived.
You can hear Devers yelling on his dash cam “Don’t you die on me! Come on, open your eyes!”
When the emergency crew arrived on the scene, the man was taken to the hospital. They treated him for the injuries he sustained in the accident and he survived. Devers was shocked when they told him because if he didn’t act quickly that day, the man would have died.
