Police Look For Missing Child But The Dog Saves The Day

I’m sure that anybody who has ever had a dog in their life would agree with me that they are pretty awesome. They do wonderful things and even if they are nothing more than a companion that sits by your side, it is something that you wouldn’t live without. As it turns out, some dogs are able to go beyond being a companion and a cross over into the realm of a hero. That was the case with Freya, and you will love what she did.

Freya is a police dog and, like the shepherd that was winning at the Westminster kennel club dog show, she had some pretty awesome things to offer as well. She is a Bavarian Mountain Hound who works in the Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. She has perhaps the most important job that we could ever think of, she finds lost children and it is her specialty. Over her career, she has been responsible for saving many but now there is another to add to the list.

When deputies were dispatched to a residence where a 14-year-old autistic child was missing, they were discouraged. They had already searched the area but the child was still missing. That is when Freya was called. She came with her handler, Deputy Ron Oliver, and was given a piece of the child’s clothing to catch the scent. That is where the search began.

Although police and searched for quite some time, Freya was able to find the child in only 20 minutes. The child was curled up in a ball, hiding in the woods near Lacombe.

The little one was frightened but, thankfully, was in good health after being lost in the wood for three hours.

“This potential tragic story finished with a happy ending. Our canines are amazing animals who are invaluable to our deputies and citizens,” said Sheriff Randy Smith.
