Believe it or not, there are folks out there who love keeping their chickens warm and stylish. I’m talking about colorful saddles and fashionable crochet sweaters folks. And, interestingly, it’s not like these items are hard to find. Apparently, there’s quite the little industry for chicken fall fashion out there on ETSY with designers offering all kinds of appealing clothing for feathery fashionistas. And they are just starting to roll out their latest fall line for those seeking to keep their fowl both trendy and cozy this winter. Soon your chickens can strut their stuff while looking like feathery supermodels.
Some folks out there, however, say that sweaters, for example, might actually make a chicken feel colder. You see, one of the ways that chickens regulate their body temperature is by fluffing their feathers. “They trap pockets of air in the downy layers of their under-feathers, which insulates them quite well,” Daphne Cybele wrote. However, Maureen Schmidt, from Kelowna, British Columbia disagreed: “Without adequate feathering, they can get quite cold, especially if they drop their old feathers all at once.” Schmidt’s mom knitted quite a few warm garments for her daughter’s chickens. The sweaters were designed to have an opening for the birds’ wings and heads, and they button to secure to their bodies. Schmidt believes these sweaters do not restrict her chickens’ movements and that the birds actually adjust to them quite quickly.
Erin Lanston, the creator of the online shop WhmsyofWillows, has also heard some of the negative comments about the chicken clothing.
“I’ve heard the claims and they’re just that, claims,” Erin told Bored Panda. “I have never had any problems in the five years I’ve been using chicken sweaters. Chicken sweaters make people happy!” However, the woman said that chickens should always be supervised while wearing any type of clothing.
“You don’t want your pet chickens to get injured so [their clothing should be something] that is easy to get on and get off. Chickens will outrun you.”
But if you’re into dressing your chickens or just love seeing animals in sweaters, here are 27 of the cutest chickens modeling winter apparel you’ll find out there.
