It is not difficult to allow your imagination to run wild and sometimes, it can really get the better of you. That is especially true if you are somebody who grew up watching scary movies and it seems as if some of the more frightening aspects are coming true in your own life. For some, it may be things that go bump in the night but for others, it could be the possibility of a frightening creature that is creeping around in the dark. Unfortunately, our imagination can sometimes cause innocent lives to suffer and that was the case with this creature.
People saw the animal as they were driving by and it stood along the side of the road with patches of fur missing across most of its body. There was a fluffy mane around its head and whatever the creature was, it truly resembled a werewolf. I’ll be the first one to admit that Werewolves don’t exist and they are nothing more than something that was made up in order to frighten people. Unfortunately, this animal looked so convincing that people were afraid to get close, but somebody finally stepped up to the plate and did what was right.
When she got close enough to the animal, she saw that the skin was showing through its fur and was scaly. The tail was shriveled and pointed and it looks like something straight out of a horror story.
When the woman was driving by the California Orchard where the animal was often seen, she had to stop and see what was actually happening. In her mind, she wanted to know if there was an animal and if it needed some help.
When Megan Bowe saw the post on Facebook about this animal, she showed up quickly. She is the founder of Bowe’s Adoptable Rescue Pups.
“I was about ready to cry when I saw how bad off he was. He was really on his last leg. He was depressed and could barely even stand up.”
Obviously, it was no werewolf but it was a German shepherd that was incredibly sick and near death.
Megan gave him a name, King and she took him to her car to rush him off to the veterinarian. King recognized that she was trying to help him because he went without any type of aggression or fuss.
When the veterinarian looked at King, he saw that he had a broken tail and pelvis along with scabies. At first glance, he thought he was an older dog but he was actually only about a year old.
“My vet thinks he got hit by a car, and that would explain how his tail was so messed up, too. That injury happened months ago, because by the time I got him it had already started to heal incorrectly. And with such a damaged pelvis, he wasn’t able to get around very far on his own to look for food so he was extremely skinny and dehydrated.”
Mange is contagious so she kept him quarantined to keep her other rescue pets from getting it. She then put them on a special diet to build his strength and prepare him for surgery.
King began showing his gratefulness for what she did in different ways.
“He’s a super loving dog. If I sit down, he has his face right next to mine and leans in as if he’s giving me a hug. He has been so calm and relaxed through everything.”
It took about six weeks of TLC, medicine and dedicated care before he improved enough to be ready for surgery. Eventually, he might need another surgery for his other hip.
“While King isn’t out of the woods just yet, he is already doing so much better – and already looks entirely different from the ‘scary’ creature people thought he was.”
King won’t be ready to find a forever home for a few more months. Megan is now showing him plenty of love and allowing him to enjoy a life that is as happy as possible.
“He is happier than ever now. It’s hard to think that all those cars passed him by and never stopped. No one wanted to bring him home or help him because he looked so bad … But all it took was one person.”
We are thankful that the action of one kind person has helped a dog in need.
