There are some singers who are here and gone very quickly. We sometimes refer to them as ‘one-hit wonders’, but they may even have had a number of hits before they disappeared from the scene. Let’s face it, we can be rather fickle as far as our musical likes and dislikes are concerned so they may be gone from the scene so quickly that we even wonder what they were doing there in the first place. That isn’t the case with every singer, however, and there are some who have an amazing ability to continue to entertain us, many decades after they got their start. One of those singers is Dolly Parton.
Dolly Parton became one of the most famous country music singers of all time, even during a time when it was primarily dominated by male singers. She had a unique voice, a great personality and it seemed as if everything was going for her. Not only was she capable of writing and singing some of the most amazing country songs ever written, she was an actress that was known for many of her roles, some of which you have probably seen many times. Through it all, however, there was one song that really stood out among the rest, Jolene.
To say that Dolly Parton was inspired when she wrote Jolene is probably an understatement. She felt as if she had something good when she wrote it, even though she would admit that she wrote it on a whim about someone who was standing in line at a book signing. There have been a lot of rumors circulating about that song, and she may have even added fuel to the fire in this old video from the Dolly Parton show.
She told a story about who Jolene was, and perhaps it is something that was fabricated in order to keep things interesting. Regardless of what story she told, however, when she started singing the song, everybody knew that it was going to be awesome, and it was. Watch the nostalgic video for yourself below.
