Do you know any artists? Some people certainly have an artistic flair but there is a difference between somebody being creative and somebody being an artist. If you know somebody who has such a talent, you probably already recognize that they tend to stick with one particular type of art. For some, it may be pastel colors and for others, it could be poetry or working with clay. For Estonian artist Igor Loskutow, however, the artwork is quite different.
Like many artists, Igor works with wood but rather than carving it out with knives or chisels, he uses chainsaws. This award-winning artist from Germany is a member of the Husqvarna chainsaw team. They travel across Europe and show off their skills at creating some awesome sculptures using the chain saw.
One of the latest masterpiece creations is a Dragon bench that is absolutely stunning.
Loskutow carved this piece in 2017 using chainsaws, hammers, and chisels. It is similar to one that he did earlier in the year. The earlier bench was made from red-tinged wood and he gave it more of a fiery look. He won the 2015 Huskyworld World Title for what he was able to do.
How did he do it?
Large chainsaws were used when creating this Dragon bench. It began with the headpiece and the tail, carving out the basic Dragon shape before he moved onto the seat. Many of the small pieces on the headpiece were carved out early as well.
Additional parts of the bench
After the details of the head of the table were finished, he cut out the wings. He also carved the arm that you can see on the bench and added some claw marks to make it look realistic. At the end of the project, the seat was polished and the final touches were included.
Although he lives in Germany, Loskutow was born in Talin, U.S.S.R. in 1962 during the height of the Cold War. He began using chainsaws for wood carving in 2002 and went freelance in 2003. Now that he is part of the Husqvarna chainsaw carving team, he feels free to work on his craft often.
Loskutow is only one of the members of the team, the others include Andreas Martin, Jens Mielke, Sebastian Siefert, and Florian Lindner.
His additional work.
In addition to the Dragon benches, he is made many other pieces. It includes benches that feature horses, owls and other animals. He also makes many standalone animals, including roosters, dragons, bears and others.
Here are more of the Dragon sculptures he carved. It’s hard to imagine how he is able to get those fine details and achieve it while using the chains all. What an incredible talent!
This is another bench that he carved out of the red wood. The red shows through nicely, giving the entire bench a darker, red cast that makes it look awesome.
