The birth of a new child is one of the most celebrated events that we will ever experience in life. It is a moment that we wait a long time to happen but when it does take place, it seems as if we are on top of the world. That was the case with Patrick Hughes, and his parents were ready to welcome him into the world as well. His father had dreamed about doing all of the father-son things with him, such as going fishing or playing a game of catch.
As it turns out, Patrick’s father had to forgo those particular expectations because Patrick was born without eyes. In addition, he had other difficulties, such as the ligaments not supporting his arms and legs or allowing him to straighten out fully. It wasn’t long before artificial eyes were utilized and a wheelchair began to be used. When they put little Patrick at the piano, however, he took everyone by surprise.
Mom pushed down on a piano key and in just a couple tries, Patrick would find the same key. Before long, he could play back songs that he had only heard one time.
Patrick began taking requests from family and friends, including iconic children songs, such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and You Are My Sunshine. His father said: “I was ecstatic. We weren’t going to play baseball, but we’re going to play music together.”
Patrick continued to play more and more, giving public performances at school and elsewhere. When he enrolled for college, however, a teacher in the music program at the University of Louisville suggested that he get involved with the marching band. Patrick didn’t see his issues as a disability but rather, as an ability. They all wondered how this would pan out.
In the meantime, Patrick had become a talented trumpet player and pianist. They started thinking about how they could work a solution in so that Patrick could participate, even though he was in a wheelchair. They found an excellent solution.
Patrick’s father had to make sacrifices so his son could live a full and satisfying life. It is hoped that Patrick will continue to inspire others with his outlook.
“God made me blind and unable to walk. Big deal. He gave me the musical gifts I have and the great opportunity to meet new people.”
