Far too many of our brave men and women who served their country, face a new battle once they return home. This battle could include issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol and drug addiction, as well as a variety of other hardships. And when they become civilians, they may not have the same support system available to them, which is why so many wind homeless wandering the streets. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, around 40,000 veterans are homeless. To help solve these issues, there are cities around the country building free housing for these veterans. On such program is the Veterans Community Project of Kansas City.
The group decided to start building tiny homes to accommodate veterans, and right now, they’ve built around 13 homes. Four of these homes were designed for families, and the rest are for singles vets. But, each one provides folks with an opportunity to live independently. They all include a bedroom-kitchen combo a well as air conditioning systems. When folks have a chance to live on their own, this really can help build-up a sense of inner value. This also gives them a chance to take care of their mental health. For this reason, the Kansas City Project plans to expand and build 19 more homes as well as a community center.
In places like St. Petersburg, Florida, and Springfield, Missouri, there are similar homes for vets. These types of programs are being recognized as a viable solution to help solve America’s homeless problem.
However, in Los Angeles, California, after a man tried to build temporary housing for the homeless, many came out against the idea. Those folks included the mayor. Eventually, the project was abandoned, and the city banned the construction of such dwellings. You can learn more about this project in the video below.
