It’s hard to believe that Queen has been around since 1977. That’s an incredibly long time ago, especially for a rock band that continues to play to crowds of thousands of people today. Of course, there are many epic rock bands that continue to play for audiences but some of them tend to play smaller venues. That isn’t the case with Queen, and with Adam Lambert standing out in front singing, they still fill huge stadiums with screaming fans. They do it, not by reinventing the wheel but by going with what is already known and loved by people around the world, those old, classic Queen songs that we still appreciate.
Of course, there is never going to be a substitute for Freddie Mercury. When he was singing with Queen before he died, he really made the band what they are today. It was his flamboyant style when he was on the stage and his singing ability that took them to a much higher plane. At the same time, however, the band wanted to continue to play after Freddie Mercury died and in order to do so, they needed someone who could fill those big shoes. They found it in Adam Lambert, but he doesn’t try to be a replacement for Freddie Mercury, he just tries to do his best when he is out there and he does a phenomenal job.
When you watch Queen and Adam Lambert singing ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ live at Summer Sonic in 2014, you will notice something about the performance. It isn’t the fact that they are doing an excellent job, which they absolutely are, it’s the fact that they love the music and the performance just as much as the fans.
I’m sure that Queen will continue to play for large audiences and they continue to gain new fans, some of which are hearing their music for the very first time. It’s just an example of how one man, Freddie Mercury, could propel a band forward to such a celebrity status that they continue to be famous, decades after he passed away.
