All of us go through difficulties in life but at times, those difficulties may be more than what we can bear. That doesn’t mean that we are not able to get a second chance, and sometimes it is those second chances that really touch us the most.
One person who knows this all too well is Kira Omans. She is living her days now as a Chinese model but her younger years were not quite so nice. In fact, she was abandoned on the side of a bridge when she was only five months old.
Fortunately, when she was only 10 months old, she found a home with a loving American family. They adopted the little girl and moved to Washington DC.
Her parents had wanted a child for a long time and they struggled to have one naturally. Eventually, they decided that adoption was the best choice so they went through some interviews and flew to China to meet the new little girl they would call their own.
When the little girl first met her new family she was uncomfortable but it didn’t take long before she was doing just fine. She may not have had much love from her first mother but her adopted mother and father were very good parents.
Not only did they give her a great home, but they also ensured that she has access to her culture and would even attend many of those cultural festivals with her. After seeing her dance in one of those festivals, they put her in a dancing class and she continued to rehearse.
The little girl said that she was always sad because she thought that her mother abandoned her because she wasn’t loved. It caused her to pour her heart out in a note that is touching people around the world.
She wrote: “The last time you saw me, you left me on the side of the bridge… did you wait until a stranger found me, or did you rush to leave, eager to forget? Was I asleep or did I cry? If I was anything like I am today, I probably cried.
I grew up to be pretty sensitive, so I cry at most things. Like videos of soldiers coming home to surprise their kids. And Christmas songs. And Pixar movies. Especially Coco. Did you cry?”
She went on to say that she felt that her mother abandoned her because she did not love her. She had come to realize, however, that her biological mother had loved her and her own heart was breaking.
She ended up thanking the woman for being a part of her. I’m sure it was therapeutic for her to write this letter and it is something that we appreciate being able to be part of.
