Medical science continues to amaze people with the way things are advancing. It seems as if things that are commonplace today would have been nothing more than a miracle yesterday. Perhaps this is seen best when it comes to premature babies. They happen more frequently than most people realize but the majority of pregnant women are not expecting to give birth to a preemie when all is said and done.
Sussie Bea was a beautiful premature baby who was born weighing only 440 g. That’s just over 1 pound! When she was born, the mother was only 22 weeks and four days pregnant. She was coming almost 5 months early. Jodie, the mother, was told that the odds of her daughter surviving were very low. Even if she did survive, she would have to deal with many health struggles.
Jodie and the father were not about to give up.
This couple really fought for the life of the baby. They had hope that Sussie would survive.
Lee, the father, had the following to say: “They said she wouldn’t be breathing for long and might not look like we expected. They said they would let us be together as a family.
She came out and gave a little whimper, so they started working on her.”
The doctors really didn’t hold out much hope and they didn’t even think it was worth operating on Sussie because she had such a low chance of survival. That is where this precious little bundle of joy proved them all wrong. For three months, she struggled to survive at the Ronald McDonald House at Arrowe Park hospital in Wirral, Merseyside.
Lee said: “I will never be able to explain just how truly amazing all the staff was, it is beyond words.”
After spending five months in the neonatal unit, it was finally time for Sussie to go home. She was going home just in time for Christmas.
What a precious little fighter! Our congratulations to the family and we are so thankful that they didn’t give up hope.
