I’m sure that most of us are well aware of the problem with homelessness that is being experienced in many countries around the world. The people who find themselves living on the streets get there for a variety of reasons but sometimes, it seems to happen for no reason at all. Perhaps one of the saddest situations is when a veteran loses their home and is living on the streets. It is more common than most people realize. Some 40,000 American veterans are living without a home according to the US Department of Housing And Urban Development.
In order to deal with the problem, Kansas City decided to build a village to look after those veterans. It is known as the Veterans Community Project of Kansas City and there are already 13 homes in place. Four of the homes are for families and the rest are for veterans who are single. It provides everything the veteran needs to live an independent life. Not only that, it can build up their self-worth in a tiny home that has a kitchen, bedroom and a heating and air-conditioning system.
When an individual serves in the military, they often forgo some of the basic necessities in life. The daily routine isn’t what it typically is for most people and they don’t usually take care of their own finances. When they get out of the military, they often deal with substance abuse and that could lead to homelessness. In order to overcome this, the Kansas City Project is in place and growing. They hope that a community center and 19 more homes will be built.
Some people have questioned how a project such as this can help veterans with their difficulties. They hope that not having to worry about their daily necessities will allow them to focus more on their mental health. Having these homes at their disposal takes a big problem off of their list of struggles.
Funding the project is also an area where people have had questions. It seems as if it is funded primarily by donations. A single tiny home is around $15,000 and with more donations, more vets can be helped.
Another area that has taken advantage of this type of situation is St. Petersburg. Other places where they have built tiny homes for veterans include Springfield, Missouri. Their master plan may do much to help with the problem. They converted abandoned trailer parks into a growing community of small homes to help the homeless.
Not everyplace is willing to accept such a tiny home project. In Los Angeles, a man tried to do this with temporary housing but many opposed the idea. This included the mayor, who thought that the answer to homelessness was not to be found in tiny homes. All the men wanted to do was to help the homeless but they were banned by the city.
