It’s hard to understand how or why so many infamous murderers seem to have a macabre group of fans and penpals who correspond with them when they are in prison. Personally, I think it has a lot to do with how many news outlets sensationalized their crimes to the point where they are not real people anymore but fictional characters you find in a book, movie, or TV show. Some folks may see this as a harmless practice while there have been cases where a few women have gotten totally lost in the delusion. A famous example was Richard Rameriz, who is said to have never had a shortage of love letters from women (perhaps a few men) all over the country until he died in 2013.
And now it seems that family murderer Chris Watts is enjoying a similar form of dark celebrity as he serves his life sentence in prison for the murders of his pregnant wife and two daughters. A source that spoke to Watts in jail recently shared with People how the killer started responding to fan mail because he was bored and has now cultivated a deeper bond with a few of his pen pals.
“He got a lot of letters at first. Many of them are from women who thought he was handsome and felt compassion for him. He had nothing better to do, so he wrote them back. And he started having penpals. A couple of them stood out, and they’ve kept in contact,” the source said.

When he was asked if any of the women who wrote him felt troubled by the fact he murdered his entire family, the source replied, “Believe it or not, no. They have compassion on him, despite what he did.”

However, not every letter he receives is from his fans, a few people write him out of anger, and many are from very religious folks.
“Some of the letters are angry. A lot of them are from people of faith who want to pray for him. But then he gets letters from women who want to connect with him, you know, romantically. He responds because he doesn’t have anything better to do,” the source said.

When what’s first arrived in prison, he had the largest shipment of mail because his story was so publicized and viral online, but the stream of letters had begun to slow down until recently. After the Netflix documentary, American Murder: The Family Next Door, came out, the killer’s fan mail once again picked up.
