We want to warn our readers that the following story contains graphic depictions of suicide and child abuse that may be too upsetting for some. Reader discretion is advised. No question being a single mom is one of the hardest jobs in the world. These women have to take on the world while providing for their children, and often they have to take on two or three jobs to make ends meet. Many single moms live in poverty and face daily sacrifices to do what it takes for their children to survive. However, there are times when financial hardships and mental health issues can make life seem unbearable. Unfortunately, some may decide that death is the only way out. But, while suicide by itself is a horrible act, taking another person’s life is even worse — especially when that life belongs to your own child.
Sadly, this is what Jessy Paola Moreno Cruz, a 32-year-old single mom who lived in Columbia, decided she had to do. The woman and her son May Ceballos lived in the city of Ibague. On February 7, she took her child to the La Variante Bridge, which hovers 330 feet over the Magdalena river in the city of Tomila in Lague. In several online videos, we see the distressed single mom cradling her confused child tightly as she tries to keep away from first responders, urging her not to jump. However, despite their attempts to talk Cruz down proved unsuccessful as the woman jumped backward, taking her child with her.

Horrified first responders were said to have been grief-stricken by what they witnessed. A local news outlet reported that the child was heard begging Cruz, “Mom, please don’t jump.” Tragically, even her own child’s pleas made no difference in the end. After the incident, rescuers went about the task of searching for the bodies at the bottom. However, they were not able to locate them.
Several reports were stating the woman was under tremendous financial pressure as she was filing for bankruptcy. She had also been evicted from her home, and both she and her child were living in their car when she decided to end it all.

There’s no word about the child’s father or why he wasn’t more involved.
Mayor of Ibague, Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo, noted that Cruz’s choice to kill both herself and her child was caused by the terrible economic conditions and political issues in Colombia. He said:
“The incident has a lot to do with the terrible situation we are facing in Ibagué and all over Colombia.”
