If there’s one thing most parents enjoy is watching their babies sleep. There’s just something so peaceful and comforting about watching their bright, innocent, sweet little faces while they slumber. It reminds us why we work so hard and sacrifice so much to provide them with a brighter future while restoring our faith in humanity. Watching the rise and fall of their chest lets us know that all is right with the world. However, what if your baby opens their eyes as they sleep?
Yes, that’s right. Babies can and do open their eyes while sleeping. It may seem a bit scary, but lots of parents talk about having similar experiences with their children.
So what should a parent do when this happens? Should you wake them up? Call 911? Or just leave them be? Well, before you grab your phone, relax. This behavior isn’t anything serious. In fact, it’s perfectly normal.
The medical term for this odd behavior is called nocturnal lagophthalmos. This condition is usually physiological, which means there’s no physical origin nor any medical cure.
Often babies may sleep with their eyes partially open, but there are cases in which their eyes can be fully open, and while they dream, their eyes may also move!
This condition is pretty common in infants, and even some adults have it.
There’s an estimate that about 1.4 percent of the human population sleeps with their eyes open to some degree, and the condition runs in about 13 percent of families.
Here’s a video with more on this bizarre condition.
You can see what it looks like when a baby sleeps with their eyes open while dreaming in the video below.
