Kelly Clarkson Says That ‘Country Music Doesn’t Sound Country Anymore’

When it comes to music, we all have our personal favorites. We also tend to have opinions and we typically enjoy music from a certain era and we may hate music from another era. It seems as if this is not only something that is felt by those of us who listen to music, it is also felt by those who write and sing the music as well.

Kelly Clarkson had a lot to say about country music and it seems as if she is not willing to hold back on her opinion. She was promoting her upcoming talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show during the YouTube Q&A session and she was asked to define YouTube slang. When she was asked about ‘farm emo’, which many youngsters used to describe country music, she started it on a rant that is strong enough to curl your toes.

“You know why? Because country music doesn’t sound country anymore…Country music is gone. Like, I don’t know who’s making it, but there might be like four people. Now it’s like weird word rap,” Clarkson says. “I love that when I started doing country they were like ‘Oh, you’re pop. You can’t do country.’ I was like ‘I’m sorry, let me show you this list of the Top 20,’ which by the way did not include one female.”

Clarkson talked about her past experiences on the country charts, including her 2010 hit, ‘Don’t You Wanna Stay’. She doesn’t specifically saying ‘country music’, but she has been a fan of it for many years.

“I’m not in the country music industry. I’m not trying to get played on country radio. Here’s the thing: I just love country music. So why don’t we all start putting our ’80s and ’90s records on and let’s figure out ‘What is country music? What’s the sound we like again?’ ‘Cause it’s not what you’re playing on the radio. I’m mad about it.”

She is also upset over the apparent lack of women who are being played on country music radio. She talked about the 90s, which had many female artists including Tricia Yearwood, Reba McIntyre, Shania Twain, the Judds, Dolly Parton and Martina McBride.

“Y’all don’t play people with boobs either,” Clarkson continued. “I was so inspired by Reba, Trisha, Patty…Martina, Terri, The Judds, Wynonna, Dolly, Shania. All these women from the ’90s. What is happening in country music? This is what’s happening: y’all aren’t playing country music anymore.”
