When most of us think about lions, the first thing that really comes to our mind is that they are the ‘king of the jungle’. They seem to be at the top of the food chain and even their roar can make the fiercest person tremble with fear. There are even a lot of movies that are made just for that purpose, and it doesn’t matter if the lion is the villain in the movie or, as we have seen in some Disney movies, they are the star of the show, the effects are the same. Lions are strong creatures and we certainly would not want to come up against one because it is likely that we would lose that battle 100% of the time.
Then again, there are some people who seek out lions, and that includes wildlife photographer Simon Needham. He was south of Johannesburg visiting the GG Conservation Wildlife Reserve and Lion Sanctuary, he happened to see something that really caught his eye. Fortunately, he was also equipped with a camera and he was very quick to pull it out and snap what is perhaps one of the most phenomenal lion pictures that we have ever seen in our lives. What he saw take place that morning was a male lion that stood on top of a bone hill. He was standing there surveying his land and although he was only there for a minute or two, the picture is going to live forever.
For a wildlife photographer, seeing this type of event and taking a picture is a moment that they can only dream of. He just happened to be at the right place at the right time and it is a picture that he will be proud of for the rest of his life.
Although he will continue to take wildlife pictures and enjoy his art, it is this one picture that will really define him in so many different ways. It truly was one in a million, and it shows us just how wild and wonderful the world can be.
