When you are a police officer, you never quite know what you are going to get into. Most of us are aware that we can leave in the morning and face the direst circumstances at a moment’s notice. For a police officer, however, it’s all part of the job. Some police officers have even described their job as being hours of boredom that are punctuated by moments of sheer terror. Of course, we realize that they go through a lot but most of them appreciate the fact that they have the opportunity to protect and serve. That includes a police officer in the Little Rock, Arkansas area, Cody Hubbard.
Hubbard was a fairly new police officer on the job when he received a call that will forever have changed his life. The 23-year-old found himself with a young child in his hands, an infant, who was choking. Most of us would have a rough idea of what to do when faced with this type of situation but for Hubbard, it was a matter of life and death. At this point, he realized that the three-week-old baby, who had been choking on anti-gas drops was not going to make it unless he stepped up to the plate and did the right thing.
As you can see in the video below, he did more than the right thing, he did everything. He snatched the baby from their hands and in his words, his dad instincts kicked in.
Hubbard started the Heimlich maneuver for infants right away. He patted on the baby’s back 24 times according to the video, but he says he felt as if he was doing it a thousand times per second. In the end, he got the baby breathing and crying and saved the baby’s life.
